Get Outside and Get Dirty today....
The Interurban Trail through Ozaukee County is the perfect local option for walking, biking, or even rollerblading. While it may not qualify as a “destination trail,” it offers a mix of scenery, community charm, and—best of all—fantastic food stops.
This section comes with frequent road crossings and a variety of trail conditions, but the payoff is worth it:
👉 Trail Tip: Don’t rush through this section—your taste buds will thank you.
The trail through Grafton offers even more great food choices, though some of the best options are just a block or two off the path. Afterward, crossing the trestle bridge over the crystal-clear Milwaukee River feels like the true gateway to quieter miles ahead.
From here, the landscape shifts to farm fields and golf courses, with fewer road crossings and a fresh section of pavement (repaved in summer 2025). You’ll roll easily into Port Washington, where the real highlights await:
👉 Best Moment: Coffee and a croissant while listening to the marina quietly come alive.
Beyond Port Washington, the trail’s continuity gets tricky. With one of the nation’s largest data centers under construction right next to the trail, this stretch will be disrupted for a year or two. The good news? The pavement here badly needed replacing, so think of it as a forced break until the upgrades catch up.
The Interurban Trail is best enjoyed as a local ride for exercise, commuting, and eating your way through Ozaukee County. It may not be a long-haul destination trail just yet, but with future upgrades in the works, it’s steadily moving in that direction.
A good local trail that needs a lot of upgrades to be on the level of the gold standards for the midwest such as The Heart of Vilas County Trail in upper Wisconsin and the TART system in Traverse City, MI.
I developed this in-depth trail rating system to share what I think are some of the key components of enjoying a destination bike trail. You can download this pdf and it is fully interactive for quick reference to key information without requiring you to google any of the information.
This is a sample of the relive video content which will be created for each bike trail. This is an older relive map and will be updated in the fall of 2025. I will be creating Relive maps for multiple sections of the IBT.
Great flat beach to walk on as well as paths through the woods of this historical state park. I State Park Pass is required to enter the park.
If you like to kayak, bring them along because the Milwuakee river from Fredonia to Grafton is a nice slow water paddle with multiple kayak launches along this section.
You will find peace and serenity amongst the graceful sand dunes in this state park. A state park pass is required to enter this park. You can wander the trails through the dunes or on the sandy beach along Lake Michigan.
