Getting dirty's Guide to the Interurban bike trail

Restaurants, Lake Michigan and Serenity

Interurban Trail – Local Flavor with a Side of Scenery

A Trail for Everyday Adventure

The Interurban Trail through Ozaukee County is the perfect local option for walking, biking, or even rollerblading. While it may not qualify as a “destination trail,” it offers a mix of scenery, community charm, and—best of all—fantastic food stops.

Mequon to Cedarburg – The Foodie Stretch

This section comes with frequent road crossings and a variety of trail conditions, but the payoff is worth it:

  • Hollander’s Streusel French Toast – fuel that makes pedaling feel optional.
  • Mequon Public Market – a wide selection to fit every craving.
  • The Stilt House or Anvil Pub in Cedarburg – ideal lunch breaks with plenty of character.

👉 Trail Tip: Don’t rush through this section—your taste buds will thank you.

Grafton – Just a Block Away

The trail through Grafton offers even more great food choices, though some of the best options are just a block or two off the path. Afterward, crossing the trestle bridge over the crystal-clear Milwaukee River feels like the true gateway to quieter miles ahead.

Into the Quiet – Grafton to Port Washington

From here, the landscape shifts to farm fields and golf courses, with fewer road crossings and a fresh section of pavement (repaved in summer 2025). You’ll roll easily into Port Washington, where the real highlights await:

  • Coal Dock Park & Upper Lake Park – not technically on the trail, but absolutely worth the detour for stunning views of Lake Michigan.
  • The Daily Baking Company – home of chocolate croissants that might just be worth the ride alone.
  • Dockside Deli – grab an early breakfast by the marina and watch the harbor wake up.

👉 Best Moment: Coffee and a croissant while listening to the marina quietly come alive.

Heading North – A Work in Progress

Beyond Port Washington, the trail’s continuity gets tricky. With one of the nation’s largest data centers under construction right next to the trail, this stretch will be disrupted for a year or two. The good news? The pavement here badly needed replacing, so think of it as a forced break until the upgrades catch up.

Final Thoughts

The Interurban Trail is best enjoyed as a local ride for exercise, commuting, and eating your way through Ozaukee County. It may not be a long-haul destination trail just yet, but with future upgrades in the works, it’s steadily moving in that direction.

Trail Rating 86 out of 220

A good local trail that needs a lot of upgrades to be on the level of the gold standards for the midwest such as The Heart of Vilas County Trail in upper Wisconsin and the TART system in Traverse City, MI.

IBT Trail INteractive Trail Rating guide

I developed this in-depth trail rating system to share what I think are some of the key components of enjoying a destination bike trail. You can download this pdf and it is fully interactive for quick reference to key information without requiring you to google any of the information.

Relive video sharing a portion of the IBT

This is a sample of the relive video content which will be created for each bike trail.  This is an older relive map and will be updated in the fall of 2025. I will be creating Relive maps for multiple sections of the IBT.

Additional nearby outdor activities

Harrington Beach State Park

Great flat beach to walk on as well as paths through the woods of this historical state park.  I State Park Pass is required to enter the park.

Milwaukee River

If you like to kayak, bring them along because the Milwuakee river from Fredonia to Grafton is a nice slow water paddle with multiple kayak launches along this section.

Kohler-Andrae State Park

You will find peace and serenity amongst the graceful sand dunes in this state park.  A state park pass is required to enter this park.  You can wander the trails through the dunes or on the sandy beach along Lake Michigan.
